When your past holds you hostage, it keeps you from experiencing how beautiful life can be.
No matter how hard you try to keep moving, something keeps pulling you back. Maybe the memories come out of nowhere. Maybe you feel constantly on edge, jumpy, and bracing for whatever’s coming next. Maybe you’ve been trying to push it all down for so long that feeling steady has started to feel like something only other people get to experience.
Through therapy for trauma and PTSD, we help you take back your power so you can feel safer and live with more ease.

What Therapy for Trauma & PTSD Can Help With
At Rove Psychology & Psychotherapy, we work with adults navigating a wide range of traumatic experiences, including:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
A response to a terrifying or overwhelming experience that leaves you stuck reliving this event in the present, desperately trying to avoid reminders of the event, having persistent negative thoughts and feelings, and on edge and unable to move forward, no matter how much time has passed.
Complex PTSD (cPTSD)
Prolonged or repeated trauma, particularly in relationships or early life, that leads to chronic fear, deep shame, difficulties with emotion regulation, and a fractured sense of self.
Childhood & Developmental Trauma
Early experiences of abuse, neglect, or unmet emotional needs that continue to quietly shape how you see yourself, relate to others, and move through the world as an adult.
Abuse (Emotional, Physical, and Sexual)
Being harmed or controlled by someone you trusted can leave lasting wounds around self-worth, safety, boundaries, and the ability to trust again.
Sexual Assault & Sexual Trauma
Experiences of sexual violence can profoundly affect your sense of safety, your relationship with your body, and your ability to feel at ease in the world.
Medical Trauma
Intergenerational Trauma
Patterns of pain, fear, and survival responses passed down through families, often without anyone fully understanding where they came from or why they persist.
Workplace Accidents & Injuries
Traumatic incidents at work, including serious injuries or accidents, can result in ongoing fear, avoidance, and difficulty returning to a sense of normalcy. WSIB-covered PTSD treatment is available.
First Responder & Frontline Worker Trauma
Repeated exposure to distressing and life-threatening situations takes a real toll. We have extensive experience supporting first responders, frontline workers, and others in high-stress roles, including WSIB-covered PTSD treatment.
Systemic Trauma
The ongoing impact of discrimination, oppression, and systemic harm on a person’s sense of safety, identity, and well-being. We are committed to providing trauma-informed, anti-oppressive care for all clients.

Approaches We Use in Therapy for Trauma & PTSD
Deciding to face what happened takes real courage, and it’s okay to not know what to expect. At Rove Psychology & Psychotherapy, we take the time to understand your history, meet you where you are, and move at a pace that feels right for you.
Our trauma therapy draws from these evidence-based approaches:
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
CPT is a step-by-step protocol specifically designed for PTSD. It includes session-by-session agendas, symptom tracking, and between-session exercises to build skills over time. The focus is on understanding how traumatic experiences have shaped your beliefs, and developing tools to shift the beliefs that are keeping you stuck.
Emotion Focused Trauma Therapy (EFTT)
This approach focuses on identifying the core painful emotions that are keeping you from moving forward. Rather than avoiding those feelings, we work through them together in a way that’s safe, supportive, and genuinely healing.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills
We incorporate DBT skills to help you build capacity to tolerate distress, regulate difficult emotions, and develop mindfulness tools that support your recovery between sessions.

Questions About Therapy for Trauma & PTSD
Do I have to talk about the details of what happened to feel better?
Not necessarily. Your trauma therapist in Toronto won’t focus on the graphic details of traumatic events, but we will talk about what happened and how it has impacted you emotionally and shaped your beliefs. That’s where the real work of healing happens. We will always move at a pace that feels safe for you.
Will I feel worse before I feel better?
It can be hard to revisit painful experiences, and some trauma symptoms may feel stronger in the early stages of treatment. We work carefully to ensure that the process never feels overwhelming, and that we’re always working at a pace that’s right for you specifically. Retraumatization is something we actively work to avoid.
I'm not sure what I've been through counts as “trauma.” How would I know?
Trauma doesn’t have a single definition, and it doesn’t have to look a certain way to be real. Some common signs include:
- Preoccupation with memories of past events
- Flashbacks
- Irritability or anger that feels out of proportion
- Emotional numbing or disconnection
- Strong guilt or shame
- Feeling on edge or easily startled
- Disproportionate reactions to everyday stressors.
If any of these feel familiar, it’s worth talking to someone.
How do I know my therapist can handle what I've been through?
Your trauma therapist works only within their areas of clinical competency. They take care of their well-being so they have the capacity to fully show up for you. You will never be asked to filter yourself in session. If you have concerns at any point about whether this is the right fit or what to expect from your therapist, we will talk about it openly. Your comfort and trust in the process matter.
Is there a trauma therapist near me?
Yes. Rove Psychology & Psychotherapy offers in-person trauma therapy in Liberty Village, downtown Toronto, as well as virtual trauma therapy for clients across Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. We also provide WSIB-covered PTSD treatment for first responders, frontline workers, and individuals with eligible workplace injuries.
